FIFA 2010 World Cup Ceremonies
When South Africa was chosen to host the FIFA World Cup, the ceremonies became a unique opportunity to celebrate one of the world’s greatest sporting events and reintroduce South Africa–and indeed Africa–to a global audience. We worked with VWV to create a uniquely African celebration, generate pride across the continent, command respect from the watching world and inspire everyone.
For the daylight opening we created a deliberately low-tech, high-humanity spectacle imbued with the passion, color and rhythm of everyday South Africa. Our volunteer cast of 1,000 injected palpable energy in a performance of tangible cultural authenticity and integrity. The closing celebrated the games and the host nation with a high tech visual spectacular of live action and moving imagery. Viewed by 500 million people, the ceremonies were dubbed “spectacular and vibrant” by the BBC and earned accolades from press around the world.
